Coagulation-condensation structure formation in aqueous suspensions of mixtures of sulfur and gypsum

Abstract

The characteristics of structure formation in hydrosuspensions of powdered sulfur and its mixtures with gypsum was investigated. The effect of cationic (CTAB) and anionic (SDBS) surfactants on the surface tension of water; ζ-potential of the sulfur particles and wettability of sulfur was learned. Both surfactants at low concentrations; lead to an increase in plastic strength (Pm) of the suspension; and at high concentrations (above CMC) – they lead to Pm reduce. In addition; it was found that the surfactants substantially change ζ-potential of the sulfur particles – cationic surfactants  lead to charge exchange and anionic surfactants increase the negative charge of the particles. These changes are the result to restructuring in the adsorption layers of surfactants - the formation of a saturated mono-layer while up to Pm maximum; bilayer - after CMC (while the Pm is reducing).
